For me it's been quite obvious but I am surprised how many iPhone owners I see complaining about EDGE speeds when they're covering the antenna (that black plastic area on the back of the phone) with their hand.

A very useful tip for those using EDGE: Take your hand off the antenna! Your meaty fingers are absorbing all the Internet packets.

The advantage is especially obvious when you have low signal strength - but even when I have full bars, I see a 50% speed increase when my flesh isn't absorbing all of those radio waves.

Let's not forget that the warning manual that comes with the iPhone (you did read it, didn't you?) says your flesh must remain three-quarter inches away from that antenna otherwise you exceed FCC limits for radio exposure.

That's really good to know. I never actually knew that the antenna was at the bottom of the device. I would just have assumed it was near the top. Looking at those pictures, the optimal positions to hold it in seem rather awkward, though...

I seem to only be getting the same results as you sporadically, however i'm in an area with much better edge coverage. I get 160k on average with my meaty fingers covering the awkwardly placed antenna. Where are you that speeds are so bad? how many bars of service do you have?

I used the JailBreak in my Iphone before Bringing up to date mine firmware and now all the programs and metodos to unblock the SIMcard use Firmware 1,02, being that mine he is 1,00 and file of the modem is ICE03.12.06_G.fls…
Exists another way to bring up to date firmware without using the Itunes? Since the same it does not leave me to bring up to date! I tried with (Itunes 4,0, 3,2).
They forgive for my bad English….

to nate and everyone who have their iphone activated,

i just got an iphone from the US, i'm currently here in Asia. i've searched for hacks to activate the iphone like DVD Jo's and others but i guess it is not working anymore since i'm having errors accessing itunes store even though i have iTunes 7.3.0.54. right now i'm still seeing the "EARTH" in the screen (Activate; connect to iTunes) )and i want to activate it w/out AT&T. can anyone help me with the step-by-step guide on how to activate iphone and get out of this EARTH screen and see the menus? can it be done thru iTunes 7.4.1?
APPRECITE ANY HELP YOU GUYS CAN OFFER!! thanks and good job to you guys, more power to the site nate!!
