My iPhone's radio fried - can I have yours?

Tags: broken, fried, help, iphone, radio, salient
So in an attempt to figure out what was bricking unlocked phones on 1.1.1, I upgraded my unlocked phone to 1.1.1. After a number of (shall we say) valiant attempts at reviving the radio, I managed to brick it even further, by somehow completely breaking the radio. I have this fun message as shown on my phone, and nothing (not CommCenter, not bbupdater, not iEraser, nor NORDumper) can communicate with the baseband on the phone. All restores fail because they can't talk to it.

So it looks like if I want to continue testing with 1.1.1 I'm going to have to replace the radio board on my phone with a new one.

If anyone here has an iPhone with a cracked screen or some other non-radio problem (dead battery, etc) just laying around, I could definitely use it. I'll send you an assembled Time Fountain for it, if you'd like.

I will actually be suprised if no one takes you up on your offer and ships you an old iPhone. I know someone out there has a kind heart.

I wish I had one to give you. :'(

I can get you one, if you can help me unlock my iphone. I have down graded it to the 1.0.2 firmware. I have done the itunes restore and disconnected it before it finished, but Im still stuck on the screen that says:
Download the iPhone firmware
Looks like you need to download the iPhone firmware. Fire up iTunes with your iPhone plugged in, and hit the Restore button. Once the download starts, unplug your iPhone. When the download finishes, click away the error message in iTunes, and close iTunes. Plug your iPhone back in, and click Check again.

Check again

let me know if you can help.
Thanks.

on snap...that sucks! Damn..my friend jacked up his iphone its lying around im gonna see if i can get it (he just bought another one!)anyway what you can do is if your sure theres no future for that iphone then just microwave that shizz for 1.5 - 2 seconds till you hear a fizz or buzz... The trick here is to get an apple store replace it based on your one year warranty but they must not find any mods/structural damage that would void the warranty...if you microwave it they wont be able to see the hacker stuff on ur phone and apparently 2 seconds on high would only sabotage internal circuitry without any outside cosmetic damage...well good luck!! 1.1.1 will be hacked!!

I actually had this exact problem happen to me when I patched something into the baseband firmware that I shouldn't have patched. Everything I tried to run against /dev/tty.baseband failed with "device busy" and launchctl didn't work either. Rebooting the phone gave the "Repair Needed" message and everything still showed /dev/tty.baseband to be busy. I did a full restore through iTunes and somehow iTunes was able to reflash the baseband even though bbupdater would not. (It may have some other mechanism to erase a corrupted baseband) You don't mention whether you tried that or not but it did restore my iPhone from exactly the condition that you're describing.

I have an iphone that has completely working circuitry.

Email me if you still want it.

it seem like you did a secpack erasing so basically your iphone is with a corrupt bb, your firmware version you can check from test field is empty, and your IMEI and ICCID show "Unknown", if that's your situation, there's easy way to fix it.
put the iphone into DFU mode, and restore with iTunes. you will have a long waiting time, almost too long that you wanna just pull out the cable...but it will finish and give you a new bb firmware, if you restore with 1.0.2 you will get 3.x; if you do it with 1.1.1 it will have 4.x.

I am bothered with a little problem, how do you set iphone to boot as normal after you did a cmd enterrecovery in iphuc? I tried the cmds from your earlier entry but it didn't work well for me. iNdependence could fix that stuck-in-triangle problem, but I don't wanna use it every time. If you can help me?

I found a solution! I had the same problem with my radio, nothing worked, I upgraded and downgraded a dozen times, followed all procedures, but still could not get ieraser or bbupdater to talk to my radio. After about 60 hours of trying various procedures, I thought in addition to unloading com.apple.CommCenter I should also "stop" (not unload) com.apple.mobile.lockdown. Then I ran the ieraser command again, via mobile terminal and could not believe my eyes. The firmware was being removed. I then ran bbupdater and was watching with glee how my baseband was being flashed. It was a sight for sore eyes. That also fixed my audio, wifi and Simcard recognition. Happy flashing :)

I have a similar problem. I have an iphone that originally had 1.0.2 and I unlocked it a few weeks ago.. Yesterday I updated 1.1.1 after I had it prepared with latest indepence pre 1.1.1 upgrade. After that It was locked and I used the latest anySim to unlock. That damaged my phone. First, I lost wifi, and then a message on screen appeared saying that it needs repair. It can't recognize any sim i put, Vodafone AT&T ... Ever since, I can't restore to either 1.0.2 or 1.1.1 and I get error messages differ from error 1013 that is normal. On 1.0.2 I get error 1012 and on 1.1.1 error 1011. At this point I can't activate the phone at all. All I get on the phone is the activate screen with a pop up message saying "Repair Needed, iphone can't make ore receive calls"
Can anyone help?
Thanks

I manage to fix the "Repair Needed, iphone can't make ore receive calls" iphone. As I posted earlier I could not restore to either 1.0.2 or 1.1.1 and I was getting error messages differ from error 1013 that is normal. On 1.0.2 I get error 1012 and on 1.1.1 error 1011. After 20 hours of failing attempts with iNdependence.app it got activated with iActivator.app and then by using iNstaller.app, (that doesn't require IP from phones wifi), I managed to install bbReload.app. After running bbReload.app and rebooting it came back to life! Then i run SimFree and my iPhone is back in business!!

OK, everyone who has done any sort of hacking, flashing, restoring etc. and ended up with an iBrick with the following symptoms:

IMEI: Unknown ICCID: Unknown, Rapair Needed (iPhone cannot make or receive calls), no audio (except headset), no WIFI i.e. corrupt baseband or baseband flash is in a limbo state and cannot communicate with ieraser or bbupdater, then the following solution MAY resolve your issue. I did this on a 1.1.1 iPhone which I had hacked a dozen times and had gone from 1.1.1 to 1.0.2 and back and forth etc, because of the above symtoms, until I discovered a very easy way to resolve the problem. After all it's only software, thus I don't believe it's possible to damage your iPhone permanently by just the software and baseband tinkering. I recommend you read this entire procedure to understand what is being done, prior to diving into it. Read each step BEFORE attempting it, so you can follow the procedure exactly as it is written and avoid possible mistakes. We will do everything via Mobile Terminal on the iPhone, since your WIFI does not work due to the corrupt baseband.

I have Macs and an XP machine and yet to my surprise, I found this solution to work extremely quick and easy with Windows. Due to the condition my iPhone was in, iNdependence and various other activation apps could not activate my iPhone because my ICCID was unknown. So, I used a Windows laptop and it worked, with PAYCAY! Please note, I did all this without a SIM card in my iPhone, until I fixed it and then inserted my SIM card :). In all the procedures, the various apps will ask you to reboot your iPhone, sometimes several times, it is OK!

You need to download the following tools: AppTappInstaller.exe, PACAY and iBrickr_0.91.

Also download the following files: ieraser, bbupdater, secpack, ICE03.14.08_G.eep and ICE03_14_08.fls

1. Get your iPhone to 1.0.2, if you are already at 1.0.2 with the yellow attention triangle on your iPhone screen, go to step 2. If you have the cable with the iTunes logo on your screen, it means you are at 1.1.1 and perhaps don't know what to do. Connect your powered on iPhone to iTunes, click away any message iTunes displays about your phone and make sure your phone is recognized by iTunes. Now hold both home and power/sleep button for 10 seconds, then release only the power/sleep button. While still holding the home button, you are waiting for iTunes to pop up a window telling you it has found your iPhone to be in recovery/restore mode. As soon as it does, let go the home button. Your iPhone screen should be blank (black). If you are seeing the iTunes logo and the cable connect again, then you will have to repeat the previous instruction.

2. Your phone has the yellow triangle (this means your at 1.0.2). Now connect your phone to your XP machine and run AppTappInstaller.exe. The first time it will fail, close AppTapp then start iTunes until you get an error message from iTunes then close iTunes again, including the iTunes Helper process. Now run AppTappInstaller.exe for a second time and wait until it is finished, it should run to the end with a success message. Go to step 3.

3. If you downloaded PAYCAY and unzipped it, you should have a "MACOSX" folder and a "YouTube (Windows) fix" folder. Open the Windows folder and double click on "(CLICK HERE) activate.bat". Follow the instruction to reboot your phone. You should now have an activated iPhone at version 1.0.2, go to step 4.

4. Start iBrickr and go to Applications, follow the instructions to install applications. After rebooting you phone several times, you should now be able to install apps. Browse for the following apps and install them: "BSD Subsystem", "UIctl" (by Nate True) and "Mobile Terminal VT100". Make sure these are installed, you can verify by refreshing the app list in iBrickr. On your iPhone go to your home screen and see if the 2 apps, UIctl and Terminal are installed. Sometimes I had to install the apps 2 or 3 times, until they actually were installed. Now copy the following files to the /usr/bin/ directory on your iPhone: ieraser, bbupdater, secpack, ICE03.14.08_G.eep and ICE03.14.08.fls. Go to step 5.

5. Tap the Terminal in your home screen. You will see a command line. Type the following commands followed by enter: chmod +x bbupdater
chmod +x ieraser
chmod +x secpack
chmod +x *.fls
chmod +x *.eep

Now press your home button and go back home, tap the UIctl icon. CAUTION, do not play around with the services by stopping or unloading them without knowing the affect. You need to tap on only the following services:

Tap on com.apple.CommCenter - you will be given several choices, just tap "unload -w"
then tap on com.apple.mobile.lockdown - again you will be given several choices, just tap on "stop" and go to step 6.

6. Now go back into Terminal and type "ieraser" in the command line and watch the magic happen.
Now type bbupdater -f *.fls -e *.eep and watch how the firmware will be loaded into the flash.

7. You should now be able to have all your hardware working again, just need to unlock using your choice of app.

I hope this procedure will help out some of you. I had so many sleepless nights trying to figure out what to do and nobody had this solution. It's actually quite simple and it works. I wish you lot's of fun with your iPhone and hope to have helped another person/friend and stopped them from going mad :)

CITRUS,
I felt kinda relieved finding someone had the same problem. I followed your guide, uploaded the files onto the fake iphone. But when looking at the iphone I do not see a terminal. All it shows is a "activate Iphone connect to itunes" message. Please reply.:)

Hey I have question, I had followed all of your steps but when it's to download the FLS and said error on Checksum. Do you why it did that? Please Reply

This didnot work for me. I followed this instead.

It was deleting the CommCenter Plist that made the difference

CITRUS
I use Windows XP and I'm trying to follow your steps for a few times... but i got always stuck on the
AppTapinstaller Step... It goes throuhg the folowing steps while going on with the AppTapinstaller:
Stage 0: 0 Looking for iphone...
Stage 1: 1 Sending preliminary files...
Stage 1: 2 Entering Recovery mode...
Stage 2: 3 Sending boot files...
Stage 2: 4 Booting iPhone in recovery mode... (and then it gets stucked in this step). My phone keeps showing the yellow triangle for a looong time, until it goes off. And nothing more happens.
Could you tell us how much time the apptap step takes to install?
Thanks.

Carelessly, I erased the baseband of my 1.1.2 OTB.
Did a restore of 1.0.2 but it couldnt restore the baseband.
Tried using AppTapp but it always stops at 4 Booting iPhone in Recovery Mode.

Am I stuck with 1.1.2 with no baseband now?
Is there another way to put back the baseband?

Help!!!!
