art day vol1:walk the smile

What is there to do on a beautiful Saturday when you have a little extra money and a big heart? Throw an impromptu art party at a local coffee shop of course. Though this coffee shop is unlike any that you have ever been to. Take a step into a place where race, gender, color, and style cease to matter as long as you are accepting. Enough praising of many imaginers' second home, Zotz Coffeehouse, and back to the party at hand.

I recently did this, and the results were spectacular. I took many random items from around my house, piled them all into a drawer I had been saving for a box piece, and took it all down to Zotz for the festivities to begin.

Supplies
========
2 tanks of helium for a total of 100 balloons
Giant bag of Jolly ranchers and 2 butane torches
Glue, Staples, paper, old laptop, drill, bits, saw, wood, wire, in short, anything that could attach things together.

Results
=======
Other than one happy Andy, and hundreds of smiles? See for yourself at the end.

So here are my suggestions if you plan to do this in the future(nice title eh?)
===============================================================================
1. Plan a little better.
2. Form a small collection of people and decide on what main projects you want to do ahead of time, but make sure you don't plan everything. By leaving room for yourself and others to experiment and play, you open up a multitude of possibilities and ideas.
3. Select different people to photograph at different times. Share this responsibility, otherwise you will either a)end up with too few pictures(like me) b)not make anything yourself(shame!)
4. Bring a new notebook for other ideas, because once you have thrown one, you are going to want to do it again.
5. Depending on how big you want the party, advertise.
6. If you make a balloon puzzle, don't expect to be able to do it.
7. a)Play music.
b)Vary the type of music to alter peoples moods, watch the types of work produced alter. (this is really an amazing observation)

I am hoping that with additional people coming in, and joining, I will be able to concentrate more on the random crafts, because while the big common projects bring people in, the jewels are the random bits of creative wonder. Mine was a zofly...

Additional balloon descriptions I did not photograph
====================================================
Orange balloon- Wrote citrus on it.
Violet balloon- Wrote Veronica on it, than remembered her name was Violet, sorry Wonka.
Best balloon art ever- Draw a balloon on a balloon. Don't believe me? Try it and watch as people lust after your balloon.
Anti helium balloon- If someone blows up a balloon and then wonders why it won't float, say that that balloon hates helium, and mark it appropriately. I used the periodic sign of "He" and a circle with a cross through it.
Failed suicide attempt- very unPC, but extremely funny. Drew a rope going to the string and tied it around my neck.

There were many more, done by a multitude of people, I'm not even sure I saw all of them.

Remember, just have fun.

Props
=====
hfp- balloon day (originally I had intended to have a balloon day in the French Quarter, but this just worked out)
natetrue- jolly rancher sculptures(everyone loved them)
Zotz Coffeeshop- For allowing me to completely take over the front room for an entire day, and actually thanking me for it.
Zotz Employees- You will be hard pressed to meet such an exotic mix of caring people.

Can you hand me the glue from the supplies drawer?
Note, it doesn't take much weight to stop a balloon from floating upright.
Rebellious child...
I wish i had a better picture. The puzzle was marvelous, but very difficult, and when one of the balloons pops, it's almost as bad as getting to the 4999th piece and then noticing... wait, it's not anywhere near that bad.
Earlier in the day Jp was suspending his hair by balloons, at least, 2 strands. Also, note the wonderful surrondings.
(5 letter word) Roger! - Roger + Ranchers =
Better view of my zofly. I wish more people had taken time to do detailed pieces. Maybe next time though.
A Zotz workers arrangement inside the coffee shop.
A wall of Zotz.

I had to show at least a little bit of this great place. It's like making art in the Louvre, you are already surrounded by architecture that is so beautiful.

Wow! It's so great to see our old ideas rehashed and revived in such a creative and active manner. How long have you been lurking, aiouande?
