Granite Outdoor Fishtank

All > Granite Outdoor Fishtank by cngodles
This was made about 3-4 years ago. I wanted to make a pond in my front yard, however I wanted to make it alot better than a usual hole in the ground in which you looked at fish.

I got my hands on what were discarded granite tomb stones, as they were replaced with bronze markers instead. They were already broken in half, and perfect for the operation. Each one was 3 inches thick solid granite, with 4 holes each. Each was super duper heavy. I used 11 of them to complete the pond. 4 of them were used for the floor, and the other 7 were used for the wall. 3 in the back and 2 on each side. I had to use silicone to plug up all of the holes as well.

The bottom ones were set in sand, and wedged together using whatever I could find. They were siliconed together and had the 16 holes siliconed shut.

The wall pieces were lagged into the 4 x 4 treated wood frame using bolts with large washers. These holes were filled with silicone also. All seams were sealed with silicone.

I managed to get a piece of thick Plexiglas that had been sitting somewhere for well over 15 years. It took me 2 days of scraping under a hot shower to get the original protective paper off of it. My bath tub clogged and it was never the same again. I used a saw-zaw very slowly to cut the plexiglas so that it would not melt.

Obviously, everyone told me that it would not hold water. And they were right, it never held water for long. It took 6 attempts and reseals to shut it. The pump stopped working, and algae bloomed everywhere, turning the water green.

It's still green today, yet there has been a Sunfish living in there for almost 3 full years. It doesn't lose water, and I think it's because there is so much muck in there, that it is now naturally sealed. Everytime I replace the water, a fish gets sick or dies, so I no longer replace the water. I may eventually build a box waterfall with a lava rock filter, to help keep the water clear.

My creation also made two local newspapers shortly after I built it.

Working at night.

Thats really cool. I wanted a pond, but the cold Ohio winters just wouldn't allow for it.

Actually, I'm in PA and this thing has almost half frozen every year I've had it.
