The spiral-clasp idea journal is a simple creation that elicits a 'wow' from people seeing me casually taking it out and writing in it. Using brass rod, a few springs, and a screw/nut combo, four arms reach out and hold the corners of the book tightly. A fifth arm grabs the pen and opens the clasps as the pen is removed.
This was the product of a day's worth of work after about a week of pondering on a cool way to keep a book closed. This turned out to be the most practical and elegant. I've had it for a few years now (always near me) and it has held up quite well.

It reminds me of a linking book you may find in myst or exile or riven etc. Only difference is its REAL and much less squeaky, aparently they dont have oil or wd-40 in riven.

That is one of the coolest things I've ever seen!

You should consider making one for a really big book(like a dictionary), only out of much thicker tubing. Sort of a Necronomicon Vault.

That's a good idea. I do have a large medical book that I bound in faux-leather and old-ified its edges that is conspicuously without clasp...

Hey Nate,
I just love this idea. I'm writing about it in my blog tonight. I hope it's ok to use one of your photos. Usually I'd get your permission first, but it's late and I'm sure you aren't up. If you object I shall remove the photo promptly. ;-)
