In my previous experiences with removing the sim tray, I got fed up with using household items that were slippery between the figers, too long, or not quite the right diameter so I designed what I call The "iTool".

At just under 2" long, this unique and innovative tool has been specifically engineered to open the sim card tray on the Apple iPhone. It is made out of galvanized steel and has a flexible rubberized coating on the handle. The unique shape provides a comfortable, controlled grip and fits perfectly between your finger tips. In my opinion the iTool is the best way to remove the sim card tray.

The iTool will soon be available for purchase on www.theitool.com for $5.99.
Meanwhile, you can get it on eBay for the same..."
Read the rest of this post

Recently my good friend http://www.gearlive.com Andru Edwards and I got into a heated discussion about watches. My old Fossil Abacus PalmOS watch was getting pretty worn, and I was shopping around for new watches. Having seen a cool http://www.gearlive.com/news/article/q307-mp4-watch-all-musical/ video-playing watch over at Gear Live, I was thinking I might upgrade to one of those, purely for geek-bling factor.

Andru, being more grounded than I am as far as fashion is concerned, suggested that the video playing watches I was looking at (I was searching DealExtreme for MP4 Watch) were all profoundly lame. So he told me to go look at the TokyoFlash watches which tell time using discrete LEDs rather than using LCDs or large pixel counts.

So I looked around for simple and easy charging solutions. For a power source I decided on a lithium-ion battery pack, since they have such great energy densities. The pack I used was from an old Qualcomm phone, which I bought with charger from http://www.allelectronics.com All Electronics, a surplus electronics shop. Fumbling around in a dark parking lot, trying to find the keyhole on the car door or mailbox. Sure, you'd use a flashlight, but who has the room for those bulky outlines?

Granted, the cuff lights aren't the most practical of solutions but they're damned cool. They're hidden in your jacket cuffs, invisible and perfectly comfortable, just waiting to be activated with a little sideways pressure.

Words don't do this little hack justice (though I do love the photos... thanks Jesse!). How about a video?

(this video appeared on the March 20 2006 Rocketboom episode)

Are you excited yet? Like I said in the video, I'm offering the cuff lights as a kit for you to build into your own jacket (jacket not included!). The cost is $20 plus shipping (and sales tax if you're in WA). Buy Now or read on for the parts list!..."
Read the rest of this post

The majority of my inspiration for this fountain is from Arthur Ganson's "Machine with Grease", which unfortunately doesn't have any video online of it working (Jesse showed it to me on the DVD). It's basically a machine with a moving pump that cascades thick grease over its own workings. I can only imagine what it smells like, though!

I had learned about sodium polyacrylamide crystals from a 9th grade science teacher (thanks Mr Ricks!) - they're these crystals that can absorb something like 400 times their own weight in water, forming clumps of gel crystals that are very soft and..."
Read the rest of this post

When the screen broke on it I was very saddened - though I moved on to a customized Kodak V570, I figured the old camera might still be useful.

For a couple of months my old camera sat on my desk, staring into my soul with its beady little lens. I knew it was no good for interactive photography any more since its screen was quite broken.

So what's the least interactive kind of photography you can get? That's right! Time lapse!

For those not in the know, time lapse photography constructs a video from pictures taken at long intervals, causing very slow motion to speed up to something appreciable.

Normally you need a very expensive camera and remote timer rig combo to do time lapse photography, but today you will learn how to make one out of a broken digital camera (worthless), a handful of electronic parts ($6), and a few hours of your time (priceless?).

If you want to follow along, there are plenty of broken..."
Read the rest of this post

Prologue

You pause just before turning the corner into the dark hallway. You've evaded the guards thus far, but your adventure is not yet half over.

Hearing a noise, you duck into the nearest doorway, disappearing into the shadows. A guard passes by. Damn, why do they always have to hire guards with muscles? It's, like, intimidating. Nevermind that now. After a tentative glance you move back into the hallway. At the end a glass door with the words "Secret File Room" etched into it stands, beckoning to you.

You glide down the hallway silently to the door. You switch on your wireless motion sensor and stick it on the wall next to the door, then advance inside the room. The receiver makes a soft click as you slide its switch to the 'on' position. A gentle hiss lets you know it's receiving properly. You'll know if anyone is coming.

Suddenly, you hear the familiar ringing..."
Read the rest of this post
