This is the first piece I completed and the first piece I entered in an art show. I loved working on this project.

I was thinking "rainbows" from the start with this project because my son and I both love rainbows and we are currently painting a rainbow with clouds on his bedroom wall. As such, rainbows were foremost on my mind when my ideas began to come together and the project began to take shape.

The bow around the bowl, of course, is the rainbow, and there are clouds on the bottom of the inside of the bowl as well as a soft looking, cloud-like rim around the top of the bowl.

I used Paper Mod Podge and parchment paper to create the bowl from paper mache using a favorite glass bowl of mine as a mould. After applying a release agent, I applied 6 layers of paper mache to the mould, allowing time for each layer to dry completely. I used a different color of parchment paper..."
Read the rest of this post

While last semester I focused mainly on metal I thought this semester I'd broaden my horizons. I decided to dip into stone, glass, wood, wool, and pre-fab materials (am I using pre-fab right?) and just get a taste of a few different things before I tried to settle down. I'm sorry that I never have any in process pics that show you how I do anything but I get too into what I'm doing to stop to get the camera.

Anyway, the first pic up top is a set of granite weapons with glass heads and a glass helmet. Sadly, my school doesn't have the equipment to blow glass so I designed all of the pieces and a very nice glass smith offered to do make them for free if I helped out a little bit. I carved the handles from slabs of granite using my handy-dandy angle grinder and attached the heads to the handles using leather string. I built the pedestal, too. Lol.

The second one up is called "Rock, Paper, Scissors". It's a wooden hand..."
Read the rest of this post

The first picture shown is of a 6' long titanium paper-style airplane currently installed outside of the sculpture department at my school. I'm putting a wider shot of it on a little lower if you want to see that. The second is of the steel tree (not quite final show worthy). It's 15' tall, about 6' wide and weighs around 120lbs. or so. Not bad if you ask me. The bottom 2/3 of the trunk is made of 3/8" thick steel pipe while the rest is either steel conduit or steel wire of varying gauges. It was all assembled using a MIG welder in about a month. The third is a picture of the (unfinished) cast-iron life-size trike I made. Mostly sheet styrene plastic and cast resin parts. The track plates and wheels were cast resin and lots of old model parts. It's approximately 1/35 scale. It's based on a vehicle described in a book by Basil Copper called "The Great White Space," sort of an H.P. Lovecraft pastiche. I used Humbrol Afrika Korps Desert Yellow and weathered the thing with Gunze Sangyo weathering acrylics and drybrushed off-white PollyS acrylic. The treads were done with Tamiya Steel and a wash of black acrylic and Gunze Sangyo rust. As for how long it took, I suppose it was about a couple of weeks all told; I didn't actually think about it. I was doing it for myself and not on a deadline. I built the body of the vehicle with sharp cornes but glued a thin (1/8 inch) square cross-section styrene strip into the inside of each corner edge so it could be sanded down to a nice rounded edge. A little more work but easier than trying to bend the plastic..."
Read the rest of this post

We were standing on a pathway overlooking beautiful Puget Sound when we both heard a rustling in the bushes behind us. Then a tiny little voice yelled "MOVE!" We turn around and to our amazement found a small woodland creature admiring the view as we were. Apparently awe inspiring seascapes aren't lost on those shorter than two inches. Anyway, we got to talking and apparently he was on a three month journey to get down to the seashore (only about a 4 minute walk). My wife and I like to help where we can so we offered to give him a lift. He graciously accepted and we were on our way. The rest of the day was one of the best I've ever had. He told us countless stories about his family and how he was chosen from his clan to go catch their years allotment of fish, 436. I guess their laws aren't very strict. Anyway, we sat and fished with him for an hour or so and left him to be at peace in his element...."
Read the rest of this post

Which kind of took the wind out of my sails. I like technology, I like playing around with new stuff. I want to print out a thing that's never existed before into cornstarch, plaster, ABS plastic, or - hey, why not? - bronze. But Quicken has me on a short chain, so I can't really justify ordering a print run on a professional fabrication device just for my own amusement.

So, I was noodling with the idea of weaving and symmetry and the next thing you know, I ended up with a hand-woven icosahedron (20 sided die, for all you half-elf fighter/clerics out there). Made from a single sheet of 8 1/2" x 11" card stock (with some left over), this little thing holds itself together..."
Read the rest of this post
