This is the first piece I completed and the first piece I entered in an art show. I loved working on this project. I was thinking "rainbows" from the start with this project because my son and I both love rainbows and we are currently painting a rainbow with clouds on his bedroom wall. As such, rainbows were foremost on my mind when my ideas began to come together and the project began to take shape. The bow around the bowl, of course, is the rainbow, and there are clouds on the bottom of the inside of the bowl as well as a soft looking, cloud-like rim around the top of the bowl. I used Paper Mod Podge and parchment paper to create the bowl from paper mache using a favorite glass bowl of mine as a mould. After applying a release agent, I applied 6 layers of paper mache to the mould, allowing time for each layer to dry completely. I used a different color of parchment paper..."

Obviously USB is the standard for powering small devices now so a USB connector was an easy choice. I happened to have a spare http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820208379 tiny USB flash drive around, so how better to get USB power than to also be a flash drive? That way it has a double use on the keychain. I decided to go with the MAX1555 lithium-ion charging IC (same one from the http://cre.ations.net/creation/binarypov-custom-wristwatch binary watch project), and an http://www.all-battery.com/polymerli-ionbattery37v130mah401235-1.aspx 80 mAh lithium-polymer battery from All-battery. The battery has about the same size as the rectangular USB connector and so works well for this project. <![CDATA[Again, a few more things from school]]> Created by pointlesspark 24 weeks ago: "Well, I finally got some more pictures together from school. While last semester I focused mainly on metal I thought this semester I'd broaden my horizons. I decided to dip into stone, glass, wood, wool, and pre-fab materials (am I using pre-fab right?) and just get a taste of a few different things before I tried to settle down. I'm sorry that I never have any in process pics that show you how I do anything but I get too into what I'm doing to stop to get the camera. Anyway, the first pic up top is a set of granite weapons with glass heads and a glass helmet. Sadly, my school doesn't have the equipment to blow glass so I designed all of the pieces and a very nice glass smith offered to do make them for free if I helped out a little bit. I carved the handles from slabs of granite using my handy-dandy angle grinder and attached the heads to the handles using leather string. I built the pedestal, too. Lol. The second one up is called "Rock, Paper, Scissors". It's a wooden hand..."

Years later, I discovered that this puzzle was originally designed by Stuart Coffin, and went by the name "Four Corners" (amongst many others). I've got a copy of Coffin's "Geometric Puzzle Design", which is a good reference and a good resource, but I had a hard time figuring out from the diagrams how the puzzle was formed - my geometric memory was a little hazy. Coffin remarks that the puzzle can be made out of a few geometric primitives, but I couldn't get a good mental image of the actual shapes of the..."

The first picture shown is of a 6' long titanium paper-style airplane currently installed outside of the sculpture department at my school. I'm putting a wider shot of it on a little lower if you want to see that. The second is of the steel tree (not quite final show worthy). It's 15' tall, about 6' wide and weighs around 120lbs. or so. Not bad if you ask me. The bottom 2/3 of the trunk is made of 3/8" thick steel pipe while the rest is either steel conduit or steel wire of varying gauges. It was all assembled using a MIG welder in about a month. The third is a picture of the (unfinished) cast-iron life-size trike I made. The final pieces are in the trunk of my car but I've only been allowed back in my studio for the past week..."

<![CDATA[Long Range All Terrain Exploration Vehicle]]> Created by frohickey 1 year ago: "Some pix of a model I designed and built. Mostly sheet styrene plastic and cast resin parts. The track plates and wheels were cast resin and lots of old model parts. It's approximately 1/35 scale. It's based on a vehicle described in a book by Basil Copper called "The Great White Space," sort of an H.P. Lovecraft pastiche. I used Humbrol Afrika Korps Desert Yellow and weathered the thing with Gunze Sangyo weathering acrylics and drybrushed off-white PollyS acrylic. The treads were done with Tamiya Steel and a wash of black acrylic and Gunze Sangyo rust. As for how long it took, I suppose it was about a couple of weeks all told; I didn't actually think about it. I was doing it for myself and not on a deadline. I built the body of the vehicle with sharp cornes but glued a thin (1/8 inch) square cross-section styrene strip into the inside of each corner edge so it could be sanded down to a nice rounded edge. A little more work but easier than trying to bend the plastic..."

<![CDATA[Orange Sesame Tofu Recipe]]> Created by natetrue 1 year ago: "A while ago I started playing with tofu and cooking it in various ways. I fell in love with this delicious Ginger Sesame sauce and tried preparing tofu in it. It was delicious, but the main ingredient in that sauce was high fructose corn syrup, and we know how unhealthy that is. So I set out to make a delicious and healthy all-natural version. This recipe uses frozen tofu, which you make out of extra firm tofu, frozen and then thawed. But we'll start with the ingredients: Ingredient list (sauce): - 4 tbsp Orange juice concentrate - 5 tbsp Reduced sodium soy sauce (if using normal soy sauce, don't add salt) - 4 tbsp Toasted sesame oil (can use normal sesame/olive/vegetable oil + use toasted sesame seeds instead of raw) - 2/3 cup water - 1 tbsp Raw sesame seeds (can use toasted sesame seeds for more flavor) - 2 tsp Italian seasoning - 1 tbsp Ground ginger (can use equivalent amount of fresh ginger, not sure how much that is) - 1 tsp Chili powder - 1 tbsp Lite salt..."
